What happens when you take a Billy bookcase seriously? A body of work in which the humble Ikea Billy becomes a vehicle for exploring colour, pattern, material and meaning. Each piece reimagines the same flat-pack frame as something entirely new – an abacus, a colour chart, a storage system, a question.

Count Billy.

The Billy transformed into a giant abacus – coloured beads on rods spanning the full height of the frame. Counting nothing in particular, but counting it beautifully. Visitors were invited to move the beads, making the work different each time someone passed.

Everyday Objects in Transition

The Fill Bill works were shown as part of the Everyday Objects touring exhibition – a body of work that began as a year-long daily making practice in 2012 and subsequently toured seven English galleries.

At Civic Gallery Barnsley the Billy pieces occupied the main gallery space, each on its own plinth, in conversation with the wider Everyday Objects work on the walls.
